Spurs overcome Pistons on road, 109-104.
Trailing by 13 points, Brandon Ingram and Dejounte Murray (16 points, 9 assists, 2 steals, 1 block) never said die in Detroit tonight, toppling the fiery Pistons effort to hang on for the win, as San Antonio closed it out with a 10-2 run to overtake the lead. Patty Mills (20 points, 8/10, 4/5 3PT) was clutch in the pocket, hitting a big 3PTer and a baseline jumper on the fast break to give the Spurs a four-point shield.
A collaborative team effort ought to be commended for this victory, as the Pistons broke the 4th Quarter open with a brief run that nearly raised the lead to double-digits again, were it not for the Spurs seizing the moment under pressure, winning the final period 32-22.
The Spurs now move to 32-9 on the season, dialing back 3PT attempts in this game, going 10-30 overall. Both teams shot above 50%, with Detroit missing five big free throws, notably Andre Hack-a-Drummond, as San Antone bricked three themselves. Detroit won the glass, 33-18. 11 turnovers by both squads, with 20+ assists for each side and the Spurs out-blocking Detroit 15-7.
Brandon Ingram sparked the comeback with some big time buckets, surging his way to 37 points, 4 steals and 3 blocks, going 12/15 and 4/5 from deep waters, swallowing his pride in the third quarter as both Blake Griffin (14 points, 11 rebounds, 2 blocks) and Andre Drummond (15 points, 10 rebounds, 4 blocks, 3 steals) dominated the paint and fiercely protected the rim with blocks. To his credit, Dejounte Murray arguably sealed the game with a defensive block on Reggie Jackson (10 points, 6 assists, 4/10) late.
The Pistons nearly won the home outing, off 20 points by Ish Smith (4 steals). San Antonio deployed Skal Labissiere for the starting unit, and the prospect contributed 10 points with 2 blocks, but shot just 3/10 and 1/6 from long range. T.J. Warren struggled off the bench and so did Avery Bradley. Every point mattered, however, with each Spur that touched the hardwood dropping 3 or 4 points respectively for the road victory.
