Spurs sign Omri Casspi.
Addressing its need for more help on the wing, the San Antonio Spurs have signed 6'9" sharpshooter Omri Casspi to a minimum deal.
Casspi, the league's only current player of Jewish descent, joins the Spurs after bouncing around a handful of teams that include the Kings, Warriors, Cavaliers and Grizzlies. Casspi is a respectable defender and his dead-eye has wowed fans, having engaged in a 2015 perimeter showdown with Steph Curry before joining the Warriors the next season, a night that saw Casspi record a career high nine 3PT shots for 36 points.
An outspoken ambassador for Israel, Casspi has his own organization that arranges trips to the country to "show what Israel is really like" to outsiders. Omri joins a Spurs team comprised of international talent, with his marksmanship and diligent effort on defense looking to fit right in.
"Oh, yeah? That's cool. Yeah, I know Omri. Nice to have another guy that can shoot, for sure," said Iman Shumpert, who is one of several NBA players to have gone on one of those tours of Israel with Casspi's organization.
"We've already run drills and got a good practice in with Casspi. He is no slouch on the defensive end, and of course he can shoot. As you know we have a defensive identity as a team that we commit to, so it's good to add another fitting piece to the mix," Coach Popovich spoke about the signing.
Casspi, 30 years old, is certainly in the later stage of his NBA playing career, but teammates have already spoken of his charming personality and pleasant attitude. "I just want to help us win. If that means knocking in some threes, playing hard defense, getting a steal or a dunk here or there, that's what I'm here to do."
This signing comes as the Spurs approach the quarter mark of its season, with diminishing returns from the likes of Rudy Gay and Davis Bertans. It is expected that Casspi will get some burn at the 3 spot behind Brandon Ingram and versatile wing, Iman Shumpert. If he plays well, he may even be slotted in at the 4, given Gay's struggles so far this season. Skal Labissiere has shown flashes of improvement in the starting role, but Casspi's career rebounding average is just slightly below that of Skal's, around the four-per-game mark.
